Healthy New Year’s Resolutions You’ll Actually Keep

It’s that time of the year again – with Christmas and Thanksgiving in the rear view mirror, now is the time when most of us make our New Year’s resolutions. Healthy New Year’s resolutions are very popular but usually fizzle out by the middle of February. The trick to maintaining a healthy resolution is to pick a lifestyle change that you can do the rest of your life. Here are some great healthy resolutions to jump-start your year:

  • Portion Control
    • Ditch those large dinner plates and opt for the smaller salad plates. Do the same with your oversized bowls that can hold five cups of Cheerios; the smaller the dishware, the easier it is to downsize your portions.
  • Eat Breakfast Every Morning
    • I often hear from people, “Oh, I’m just not hungry in the morning for breakfast so I don’t eat anything.” This is not an excuse to skip breakfast. Check out Quick and Healthy Breakfast Ideas for inspiration. Your body will thank you for fueling it in the morning.
  • Write Down What You Eat
    • If you are trying to lose weight, record what you eat to see what you are actually consuming. My favorite online food tracker is MyFitnessPal; this free online program has the best database and micronutrient (calories, protein, fat, fiber, etc.) recommendations I have seen.
  • Make Dinner a Family Thing
    • Make it a goal to prepare and eat dinner with your family a certain amount of times per week. Take turns picking out the recipes and involve everyone in the family. Get rid of any distractions including phones, TVs and newspapers when you sit down for your meal.
  • Start Snacking the Healthy Way
    • Say goodbye to vending machine junk food and hello to fabulously healthy snacks. Here is a list of 10 Healthy On-The-Go Snacks to get you started.
  • Stop Buying Junk Food
    • I’ve seen my husband do it – consume a whole sleeve of Oreos in one sitting. The problem with buying junk food is that you WILL eat it. Portion control is often overlooked and mega-calorie/bad-fat consumption ensues.
  • Buy Smart Sweet Treats
  • Set a Good Example for Your Kids
    • If your child sees you sitting on the couch munching on a bag of Cheetos, he/she is going to want a bag of Cheetos. If your child sees you chug a bottle of Mountain Dew, he/she will want to do the same. Setting a healthy example for your kids will set them up for a healthy life down the road. They will thank you for it later (thanks Mom and Dad!).

Once you master one of these resolutions, go ahead and choose another one to conquer. Remember to take everything in stride and have fun with it!
